Local teens, media, business and clergy claimed the gold, bronze and silver medal at the YiG™ First Annual Golf Invitational --By Maya Beecham Mpls, MN -- September 13, 2002 -- Despite the whirlwind of negative news concerning our youth, Youth In Gospel™ (YiG™), a GRACE Media Network Initiative, proclaimed their status as positive youth in the community. Saturday, September 7th, 2002, the group hosted the first annual YiG™ Celebrity Golf Invitational at Theodore Wirth Park, North Minneapolis. Notable figures of media, business, clergy, and teenagers, showcased their golf talent, ranging from amateurs to avid players. A few attendees included KMOJ 89.9 FM Radio personalities - Q-Bear, Mike-Mike, Big Sam; Dr. Juneau K, Robbins - Cultural Chiropractic; Larry Fitzgerald and Raymond Boyd - MN Spokesman-Recorder; Ed Mandeville - Professional Golfer; Tony Morrow - Professional Golfer, Fairway Foundation and Superintendent McKinley Moore - Pastor of Jehovah Jireh Church of God In Christ. Of course the prized attendees included teenagers Desmond Calloway - YiG™ and Fairway Foundation; other Fairway Foundation teen golfers Collin Quirt, Ross Swanson, Danielle Williams, Bobby Joe Smith and Deborah Dickerson - YiG™. Winners The golf invitational
was a manifestation of SB Barber Stalling’s,
(GRACE Media Network & YiG™ Executive Director), dream to provide
a breeding ground of success for youth interested in media. In 1978 Barber Stalling created GRACE Media Network a Christian organization that published the Gospel Registry News Magazine, which feature YiG™ (Youth in Gospel™). The news magazine was a tabloid that profiled the religious community and business professionals locally and nationwide. A segment of the news magazine was dedicated to youth, hence the title 'Youth In Gospel™'. However, YiG™ didn't become a functioning group until 1992. One night Barber Stalling called her assistant in a mad rush to find information, and the assistant told her it [information] was filed in the folder she had labeled YiG™. At that moment YiG™ (the group) became a reality for Barber Stalling. "God told me He wanted to do a new thing through youth. YiG™ was to be a handle for young people to go from mainstream to inside corporate walls, and other places." The group made its presence known in the community through the YiG™ choir, under the leadership of Lois Stewart, who was also an editor for the Gospel Registry News Magazine. From there YiG™ brought prominent talents such as Dawkins & Dawkins, to the Twin Cities, and hosted celebrity roller skating events. In 1995 YiG™ began a cable network television show, aired throughout the Twin Cities and hosted by teenagers who became the YiG Showcase® hosts. YiG™ alumni who helped develop the beginning stages of YiG™ have faired well in life, and Barber Stalling credits YiG™ involvement for a portion of their success. E.J. Bolin, past YiG™ member, started with the group in 1995 at age 14. Bolin-Johnson worked as a YiG™. television host, among other things. Recently, Barber Stalling attended a panel discussion, which included panelist City Council President Natalie Johnson Lee, a representative of the Jacob Wetterling Foundation, amongst others. There in the forefront, facilitating the panel was E.J. Bolin Johnson. Barber Stalling considered this a full-circle experience, because Bolin-Johnson facilitated the panel discussion with skills learned in YiG™. Now, Bolin-Johnson is a college graduate, married, and a Youth Pastor at High Praise Ministries Destiny Center and remains connected to YiG™. The torch
has been passed onto current YiG™ members who are living up to the
success of their predecessors. Desmond Calloway, a De La Salle
student and avid golfer, is the event co-founder of the YiG™ Golf
Invitational. When Calloway envisioned the YiG™ Golf Invitational
as a fun event outside of the norm. He said, "If you play football
you're [celebrated], if you play golf you don't exist." Barber
Stalling welcomes the variety of talent present in today's youth. "I'm
blessed. God is allowing me to work in a ministry/initiative that
shapes minds and personalities. I'm also able to share my challenges
and accomplishments with the youth, to help them." Barber Stalling
said that the church has to play an active role in the lives of
youth, to teach them how to be
ambassadors of the Word
outside of the four walls of the local assembly – right in the marketplace." YiG™ is actively planning for future events, including the October Campaign Literacy Book Drive, Theresa J. Blair Scholarship Fund (application available Nov 1), the 2003 YiG™ Celebrity Golf Invitational, and much more. If you are interested in joining YiG™, or donating time and/or monetary contributions, contact SB Barber Stalling via e-mail: GMS@gmnetwork.cc. Contact: Twin Cities Teen Golf Event co-Founder Draws Pro & Amateur Golfers for 1st Annual YiG™ Celebrity Golf Invitational and YiG/Terrece J. Blair Scholarship Benefit MPLS, MN – August 30, 2002 – How
often do you hear of a 17 Desmond Louis Calloway
is a junior at DeLaSalle High School, Minneapolis, MN where he
is a member of the Student Council, Golf team and was voted Who's
Who in American High Schools; He is a member of High Praise Ministries
The Destiny Center - Minneapolis, Fairway Foundation 'First Tee',
Minnesota Minority Junior Golf Association, YiG™ Celebrity Golf
Invitational co-founder and show host for YiG™ Forum Sunday with
GRACE Media Network. Born in Minneapolis, Master Desmond has been playing golf since the age 10. He attributes his discipline and eye for 'staying focused in his goals' to his mother Evangelist Sharon A. Calloway, along with his love for Christ Jesus. He was named after South African Bishop Desmond Mpilo Tutu winner of the 1984 Nobel Prize in Peace and realizes that he's already been marked for greatness. “I was introduced to the sport through the YMCA North Community Summer Adventure sponsored by the Fairway Foundation. The Fairway Foundation established a partnership with the YMCA lead by Mr. Ray Book to introduce inner city youth to the sport of golf.” Affectionately called 'Master Desmond' because of his keen focus on 'mastering' his goals in life. He recalls how his interest was peaked for golf. “I signed up because I like trying new things. I caught on to the instructions very quickly – I was more of an advanced player -- just from my first time. Mr. Book encouraged me to continue in the foundation’s golf program and I was continuing to be tutored by a pro. One of my mentors named Chris Toftner turned out to be an instructor. Little did I know he was the golf coach at DeLaSalle High School and four years later, I would be a student there on his team. Standing at 5-11, 155 pounds, Master Desmond smiles as he remembers golfing with Tiger Woods. “The most exciting thing for me was being selected to receive a private lesson from Tiger Woods during the 1999 Tiger Woods Foundation Golf Clinic in Minneapolis. They had chosen the more advanced students within the ‘Level 2 Program’. Calloway earned academic and minority scholarships to attend DeLaSalle High School and is listed in 2002 Who's Who in American High Schools. Although he dreams of winning the Masters "all the time," he also believes golf is his ticket into Kansas State's flight school. In no particular order, he wants to be a pilot, and astronaut and a PGA Tour player. Master Desmond says, “This is one of the reasons I’m so excited about our First Annual YiG Golf Invitational. This event allows me to demonstrate my leadership, organizational and golf skills on a different platform. YiG is doing this event to raise funds for our scholarship recipients." Look out Tiger – there’s a lion in the ruff. The scholarship is named the YiG/Terrece J. Blair Scholarship in memory of the late Terrece J. Blair (April 28, 1970-August 8, 1993) whose life was taken. She was a young mother attending the University of Minnesota with the aspiration of pursuing a career in media. The Invitational proceeds go to the first YiG™/Terrece J. Blair Scholarship founded by GMN and will benefit the scholarship recipient who is a Minnesota resident; will pursue a degree in mass communications; selects one of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) 39 member institutions; explores a student status membership in a local chapter of National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ); also benefit YiG™ hosts in their academic pursuit. The Invitational is also an opportunity to promote the YiG™/Terrece J. Blair Scholarship goal. Open scholarship application Dec. 1 - March 1, 2003. Sun Country Airlines partners with GMN to sponsor Campaign Literacy’s 10,000 books to New York City Kidz Ground Zero MINNEAPOLIS – November 5, 2001— Sun Country Airlines has partnered with GRACE Media Network to sponsor the organization’s first “Campaign Literacy: The Right To READ” community call to action to counterattack illiteracy. A volunteerism initiative in the Twin Cities of Minnesota, this initiative launched a community wide book drive and appeal to the local media and business community to keep literacy in the spotlight during the month of October up to and including National Family Literacy Day on November 1. GMN’s team will be in New York Friday-Sunday, November 9 – 12 to present books to New York City Kidz Ground Zero and Mayor Giuliani along with firefighters and officers. In the interim of the September 11 Attack on America, Campaign Literacy mobilized its contacts to assist. Sun Country Airlines caught this vision with GRACE Media Network and stepped to the forefront. "Sun Country is pleased to partner with GMN in support of this effort that will make a difference in the lives of Kidz at Ground Zero," said Sun Country President and CEO David Banmiller. "We applaud their efforts to reach out and help with this important literacy effort." “It is my (our & your) responsibility to strengthen the fabric of the nation one person/community at a time to insure fewer casualties during the aftermath of a time of crisis such as New York City Ground Zero. Our Ground Zero children need to be touched in heart and spirit. We know that family-friendly books can help anyone recapture innocence, reclaim hope and restore trust. It seems so simple, yet books are so powerful as a healing tool for the broken-spirit. Bethany House Publishers is donating audio books for those who can’t read due to illiteracy or injury. NdCAD (Network for the Development of Children of African Descent) through its Cops-N Kids/Firefighters-N Kids Book Giving Program has responded to our ‘call to action’ and generously donated 10,000 of a 100,000 new Golden Books donation received from the Golden Book Publishing Company. Budget Car & Truck Rental manager Noreen O’Donnell of Bloomington, MN provided donated shipping services that made the NdCAD book donation possible to move the shipment from Racine, WI to the Twin Cities and now to NYC. When I asked Noreen why was she doing this? She said ‘…the kids need books, that’s the bottom line.’ Adult and children have a right to read. Our Twin Cities’ mayors Sharon Sayles Belton and Norm Coleman, Minnesota governor Ventura and our 2001 spokesperson WCCO TV/ABC affiliate anchor & reporter Dave Huddleston boosted our book drive. We are so grateful for their [participants] sensitivity to our nations heartbeat during this time,” remarks Founder and Chief Executive Office of GRACE Media Network Prophetess SB Stalling. Minnesota governor Jesse Ventura proclaimed October Campaign Literacy: The Right To READ month. “I am very supportive of GRACE Media Network’s efforts to promote literacy in our communities across our nation. I am united in the fight against illiteracy and proud to partner with Grace Media and the network of volunteers, churches, media, non-profit organizations and corporate participants that are working to provide book to schools, shelters, juvenile/adult correctional institutions and community centers.” -- Governor Jesse Ventura, Minnesota “I am excited and honored to be a part

from Minneapolis and St. Paul, who have generously donated new
books to the City of New York for New York: From Minneapolis to
New York City Kidz Ground Zero with Love!” – Mayor
Sharon Sayles Belton, Minneapolis With the Christmas season approaching, the book drive is an opportunity to help put books into the hands of homeless children in shelters and replenish so many other sources with books. Campaign Literacy 2001 Spokesperson Dave Huddleston, WCCO-TV anchor states, “Many of us are fortunate enough to have books in our homes – an abundance of books in our homes. But it is amazing even in this time and age in 2001…there are many children Blacks, Whites, Native Americans, Hmongs who do not have books to nourish their lives… It takes one church, one visionary to change a community, to change a nation. All we’re asking for is one book.” Huddleston’s message is available in its entirety on the Campaign Literacy web site listed below. You may email gm@gmnetwork.cc or contact GRACE

America stands at attention MINNEAPOLIS -- September 11, 2001 -- As our nation stands at attention to the “Attack on America”, our GRACE Media Network partners & communities are well equipped to be witnesses of our faith during this tremendous time of grief, fear, doubt, anger and abandonment experienced by so many. This is not the time to speak publicly using our ‘church’ lingo. It is a public time to maintain our testimony of Christ Jesus with every ounce of confidence. It is the time to exemplify intelligence, compassion and wisdom. If we don’t have the appropriate response to the media – don’t try and answer, simply pass for now. However, if you know that you have an articulate answer, or are an expert in a related field to bring some clarity concerning our nation’s crisis -- then respond. God is love and doesn’t wish that any would perish… Be the strength that we’ve been ordained to be in this time of national crisis. This attack on our nation [America] is touching on every level within and outside of Christendom. Points to remember, courtesy of our media associate NRB member Phil Cooke: I would suggest that you go on the air tonight at the latest with a special program of prayer, interviews and discussions about what is happening. If possible, try to connect with people well-versed in these types of events -- prophecy experts, terrorism experts, college professors respected in current events and world affairs, pastors with a global perspective or expertise on the Middle East. If you can't get them into the studio, connect with them via phone. We are not necessarily news experts and cannot compete with CNN, ABC, Fox and others in news. However, we can provide spiritual insight to millions who are searching. The major networks can only repeat the facts surrounding the incidents of today so many times. Sooner or later, people will be looking for something deeper -- some type of explanation, understanding and perspective. This is an opportunity for you as a Christian broadcaster to provide that insight. Stay away from "pat" answers. Chances are, more non-Christians will be watching you over the next few days than ever before. So stay away from "Christian lingo" they won't understand, and try to provide real answers to the real questions they are facing. Do not be afraid to break into your regularly scheduled programming. This is the time to act, and make a real difference for the Gospel. TLN is providing coverage on GE 1, Transponder 15. If you need more information regarding the feed, please call Dan at NORLIGHT at (847) 568-7186. Any Christian station can pull this down throughout the day. CBN will also be broadcasting coverage on the hour. GMN (www.gmnetwork.cc) will provide links, contacts and resources to assist broadcasters, print and new media producers with quality content. Commentary It is now time...God's plan of health and wellness MINNEAPOLIS -- September 4, 2001 -- It is now time to forge forward and join forces with the National Baptist Convention Inc USA (NBCUSA) theme "Rally for Health and Wellness to carry out this mandate. This mandate strongly challenges those of the communities of faith to rethink our mission and methods in bringing wholeness in spirit to our fellowman. It is evident that there are an increasing number of casualties of ill health and illiteracy in the church. However, we can begin to be pro-active in our methods of delivery to counter-attack the disparities. The time is now to counter-attack this adversary of our health and power: There is wealth, health and knowledge in reading – it’s empowerment; we should not be losing warriors and servants of the gospel to poor health; neither should there be loses of souls to the kingdom of God, simply because that one who was lost and now found -- is discourage from the shame of illiteracy. There should be a tutor in the house of God to take the time and rebuild that ones confidence in reading. Some may need the assistance of a tutor assisted bible study class while a mainstream bible study class is in session. We must hear by the Spirit the alarm that is being sounded. It's a harsh, yet dominate sound of warning to the church. It is again the churches time to take its rightful place in doing kingdom business: restore health & power to the soul, mind and body of mankind. It is now time. Prophetess SB Barber Stalling ###
