Violence Prevention Workshop March 24-25
Mpls, MN (March 15, 2006 - GMS)
Survivors for Violence Prevention, Inc. and the
Harvard Youth Violence Prevention Center are
sponsoring a violence prevention and victim services
training. The Minneapolis regional workshop
is
scheduled for March 24 and 25, 2006 and will
be held at the Minneapolis Airport Marriott.
The goal is to bring talented individuals together to
discuss best practices, community challenges related
to youth violence prevention, and victim and survivor
service needs. There is still space available.
It will feature the renown national youth violence
prevention expert, Deborah Prothrow-Stith, M.D.
of the Harvard School of Public Health and Dawn
Anna, who lost her child in the Columbine school
shooting. Dr. Prothrow-Stith currently serves as
Associate Dean and Professor of Public Health
Practice at the Harvard School of Public Health
(HSPH). At HSPH, Dr. Prothrow-Stith created and
served as a founding director of the Division of Public
Health Practice. A Spelman College and Harvard
Medical School graduate, she has received ten
honorary doctorates, the 1993 World Health Day
Award, the 1989 Secretary of Health and Human
Service Award, and a Presidential appointment to the
National Commission on Crime Control and Prevention.
On the evening of the 24th, Dr. Reatha Clark
King, retired president of the General Mills
Foundation, will be recognized for her work related to
victim services. King, a nationally recognized leader in
philanthropy and higher education, led the General
Mills Foundation as its president from 1988 to 2002
and as its board chair from 2002 to 2003. From 1977
to 1988, King was president of Metropolitan State
University in the Twin Cities. She serves on the
boards of Exxon Mobil Corp., Minnesota Mutual, H.B.
Fuller Co., Wells Fargo, the Clark Atlanta University
and the International Trachoma Initiative. King is a
life trustee of the University of Chicago. She was a
member of the board of directors of the Minnesota
Council on Foundations from 1990 to 1999, and
chaired the board from 1993 to 1995. She holds a
doctorate in thermochemistry from the University of
Chicago and has been awarded 14 honorary degrees.
