Transcript of interview with Dr. Ben Carson, MD -- keynote speaker at AAAL 6th Education Conference: “Celebrating Successes in Educating African American Children" -- Banquet, Friday night, Nov 2

Dr. Benjamin Carson, MDGMS News Channel - Dr. Carson why did you accept the invitation to be the keynote speaker for this year's 6th Education Conference for the African American Academy for Accelerated Learning?

BC - I was particularly interested in this group because they emphasized the positive aspects of the African American community in the respect that our children are really our future - and we're not to throw them away. Let's use our resources and use our influences to make a big difference...

GMS News Channel - In your keynote, you made strong & valid points in reference to the lack of participation from our [black] males in education acceleration. Please re-comment on that point.

BC - It is such a serious problem. If you go to any of our institutions of higher learning, you'll see a complete ____ of black males there and an over abundance of them in our prison system. And alot of it has to do with the fact that they are not getting the appropriate role modeling. There are a couple of things wrong here. First of all, our [black] media and the majority media does not emphasize positive black role models. There are plenty of them doing worthwhile things to role model. There are plenty of them doing all kinds of wonderful things outside of sports & entertainment -- but they are just simply ignored. They don't see themselves in those kind of roles. The other big problem is we have accepted the whole concept that the male is not really necessary in the family. So, many of the boys are growing up without a father in the home. And without that very positive influence of what a male should be. Consequently it is very easy for them to be influenced in the wrong direction. Once you get started in that wrong direction -- get caught up in that juvenile justice system -- it is very difficult to get back on the right track. So we all have a lot of very serious work to do in this regards.

GMS News Channel - You indicated [during your keynote] that you also have a lifetime goal that you have set in motion across this country.

BC - Yes, that is the Carson Scholars. The Carson Scholars started 11 years ago. Basically, the ideal is to put those students who achieve at the highest academic levels and who care about other people on the same pedestal as we do the all state wrestlers and all state basketball players. I don't have anything against the sports people -- I don't have anything against the entertainment people. But that's not what's going to keep us in a penacle position. It is going to be the ability to solve the _____ equation, not the ability to shoot a 25 foot jump shot. So that's why we started this program and it is spreading like wildfire. We're very gratified about that. But we've got to get complete penitent that we have to change the mindset of our young people if we're to be able to compete with the Chinas of this world, who produce 392,000 engineers a year while we produce only 60,000 a year. It's not going to workout for us in the long run. So we need to start encouraging our young people now, particularly in the technological field.

GMS News Channel - To help us kickstart our coming 7th [AAAL] Education Conference, what do you say to those who were not able to join us this year and hear your comments? What can you say to help them lay groundwork and prepare for our next Education Conference?

BC - I will say this -- Everybody has alot more influence than they think they do. If you think you can do something -- you can. So get on the stick.

GMS News Channel - Thank you very much. You were just listening to Dr. Ben Carson with Grace Media Services.

Note: Dr. Ben Carson is the director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. He is living proof that perseverance, prayer and self-respect, combined with a devotion to acquiring knowledge, can overcome any obstacles in one’s way. Dr. Carson's appearance was sponsored by MN-based Medtronic Foundation and the 6th AAAL Education Conference was held November 2-3, 2007 at the Doubletree Hotel, Golden, Mpls, MN.

Bring Us Your Books and Help Kids Read Better

Mpls/St. Paul, MN (MN Spokesman-Recorder) September 2007 -- The Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder, along with KMOJ Radio 89.9 FM, Hospitality House, Sabathani Community Center, Harvest Preparatory Academy, The Alliance of Black Telecommunications Employees, Inc., and QOP (Quantom Opportunities Program) are among the Twin Cities-area businesses that serve as drop-off sites for books.

QOP is offered to students at North High School. The program is geared to help students who are failing one or more classes, or who have a GPA below 2.0, to help them turn their grades around.

Mary Ebnet, QOP’s program coordinator, describes the importance of literacy: “We work with [students] one-on-one, because if they don’t know how to read, or don’t know how to read very well, then they are not going to understand the material that they’re getting in their classroom.”

Ebnet says that parents should be aware of how well their child reads — even children in their teens. “[Parents] need to take the time to read with them one-on-one and listen to them read — even at 16…because we have students in high school who still are struggling. They don’t know the words. They’re not ready to move on to college.”

Books collected during October will be used to support programs like QOP. All books donated to agencies that serve children will be used by those particular organizations. Drop-off sites that do not directly serve children will collect books for local shelters, juvenile correctional facilities, and schools, or they will be donated to the organization of the donor’s choice.

Books for children of all ages will be accepted.

For a more extensive drop-off list, go to www.gmnetwork.cc/pages/CLA.html. The Minnesota Spokesman Recorder and other drop-off sites will be accepting donations during the month of October.

Dr. Juneau K. Robbins named 'Chiropractor of the Year' by the American Black Chiropractic Association

Dr. Dr. Robbins’ consistent efforts to promote wellness and chiropractic in the Twin Cities have produced more than good health results. Since establishing his first clinic in 1997, he has provided employment and ongoing mentorship for no less than five young doctors who have moved on to establish their own successful chiropractic practices, creating associated jobs and minority commerce in the community. Guiding the transition of students and young doctors into successful business ownership is an accomplishment of which he is very proud.

Dr. Robbins, or “Dr. J” as he is affectionately called by his patients, is known by the community for his warmth and compassion. Having downsized from owning three clinics and a full-time practice, he currently sees patients three-and-half days a week in his North Minneapolis clinic, Cultural Chiropractic North. Soft tissue injuries, nutritional consultations and wellness/lifestyle coaching make up the majority of his private practice.

He is also the co-author of 121 Tips on Raising a Child of Color, a quick-reading parenting tip-book co-authored with his father, Larry Mansfield Robbins, a city council member and retired educator from Chatham-Kent, Ontario, Canada. It is the first book of its kind written by a father-and-son-of-color collaboration.

Forward thinking, Dr. Robbins is heading an effort to create a nationally exposed website called www.blacknutrition.com, a health and wellness site designed to educate the African American community on drug-free health and wellness options along with providing nutritional recommendations targeted toward communities of color. According to Dr. Robbins, the site is on schedule to be launched in the late fall of 2007.

In the future, Dr. Robbins plans to continue working closely with the American Black Chiropractic Association to help expand and strengthen its membership and encourage active participation amongst students and doctors of color in the chiropractic profession.

GRACE Media Network Web-ATHON™ was birthed to raise capital to expand the Network technology infra-structure, staffing and build a state-of-the-art broadcast headquarter facility. "God birthed this vision in me -- ...'that which was concealed is now being revealed to Minnesota and the nations via the world wide web'. I listened to Mary Alessi sing the same words from one of the songs titled "Great Grace" on her new cd release 'Mary Alessi & Friends When Women Worship'. I knew it was my confirmation to do this. God is using a prophet to manifest a supernatual undertaking, that which seems impossible-- it takes great faith and great grace. The very act of unleashing this prophetic Network is a demonstration of my faith in God's revealed wll to me, while at the same time, activate supernatural financial giving and faith in the people of God to see GRACE Media Network expand. We will plant studios for media ministry training and production. That's what I do, by the grace of God -- birth-out media ministries."

In 1989, Prophetess Shena ReKayle 'SB' Barber Stalling combined her 15 years industry experience to established a successful management search firm with an impressive list of Fortune 500 clients. In the interim, she expanded on her entrepreneurial expertise, forged forward and defied every obstacle in her path to birth a vision that was “Divinely Designed". The electronic media bridge that Prophetess SB envisioned back in 1978, went digital, and GMN launched its Internet media ministry on November 24th, 2000. GMN set its markers in place to create and produce a Christian media cyberplex. Today, referred to as the digital bridge builder, GRACE Media Network crossed the digital divide and established 'the Black media ministry experience in the marketplace' on www.GMNetwork.cc.

Place this streaming broadcast event on your digital calendar -- tell your church, workplace associates and community friends to log on to www.GMNetwork.cc. Stephen Baldwin to Speak in Eden Prairie

Eden Prairie, MN (GMS) Actor, Stephen Baldwin will be speaking at Grace Church in Eden Prairie, Minn. at 7 p.m. on September 14.

This is part of the annual Recovery Celebration event, sponsored by area faith-based recovery ministries commemorating September’s National Recovery Month. Baldwin will talk about his struggle with alcoholism and his recovery story. “The timing couldn’t have been better, as he will be releasing a book soon,” said Steve Aase of Minnesota Teen Challenge. Baldwin’s book, “The Unusual Suspect,” is set for release later this year and tells the complete story of his addiction and recovery.

The event is free; anyone can come to hear Baldwin and other speakers share their stories or recovery. The occasion will also feature music by Dan and Sandy Alder and the Heart of the City Band and the Minnesota Teen Challenge Choir. This is the second year for the celebration. Attendees are expected to reach 4,000, up from 2,500 last year.

The goal of the Recovery Celebration is to provide an opportunity to bring together the recovery community in order to celebrate overcoming addiction. Through testimonies, workshops, and booth exhibits the event is intended to motivate, encourage, connect, and educate those who are involved in recovery.

“Many of the individuals whom we serve are eventually falling through the cracks. This is primarily because of a lack of collaboration and networking with other groups,” said Steve Erickson of AlphaCitiCorps. “For the most part it is simply us not knowing all the organizations that are out there.”

This year, three workshops will be available in the afternoon. Those who wish to learn more about ministering to addicts can attend for $25 per workshop. Booths will be set up throughout the day featuring halfway houses, counseling services and other ministries. The celebration itself will begin at 7 p.m.

Although this event is free, attendees are asked to register online or call (612)238-6800. For more information or to register for the Recovery Celebration, visit: www.recoverycelebration.com.

Remember, you have VIP seating online for ...The Anointing of 1,000 Times More (Genesis 1:11). "This is your season of Great Grace to unleash your vision. Worldwide Music, Inc artist Roosevelt George releases third music video "I Trust In You"

Houston, TX (GMS) Worldwide Music Inc. and Gospel Truth Magazine headed by Kerry Douglas have a new artist Roosevelt George, who is rapidly becoming a radio airplay favorite with the release of his single music video "I Get Joy" featured in the Gospel Truth Magazine's Gospel '07 CD/DVD compilation and listed in the top 10. On the heels of the Gospel Truth Magazine's Gospel '07 CD/DVD compilation release, Roosevelt George has wasted no time, his third music video titled "I Trust In You" is already premiering on GRACE Media Network (GMNetwork.cc) and YouTube.com.

"I Trust In You" is the third video project co- directed by George and the 'sought out' Florida based Hondel Brothers Films. The music videos have been released as a prelude to his 2007 CD project soon to be released by Worldwide Music Inc. titled Sent To Encourage You. The CD was produced by the GRAMMY nominated and Stellar Award-winning F. Darnell Davis and written entirely by Roosevelt George.

His discography includes other songs he's written such as "Jesus Is Holy" featured on the Preaching To The Choir Movie Soundtrack (Alliant Music Group/April 2006/A Code Black Entertainment Movie). Stellar Award winning and Grammy nominated Excelsior recorded his "Things Will Work Out" (God @ Work/Verity Records 2001); Chart topper Cheryl Lynn recorded his "People Need Love" and performed it during her Japan tour. Roosevelt George wrote this song as an awareness message to the world and a love message to the families suffering & dying from the deadly Aids epidemic; Stellar Awards 2006 nominee James Grear & Nu Friends recorded "Jesus Is Holy" and re-recorded "Something's Happenin" (James Grear & Nu Friends Live/Alliant Records 2005). He wrote songs on all five projects released with Gold-selling group James Grear & Company -- the inspirational, non-gospel "Beautiful Black People" was released as a radio single to gospel and urban radio to coincide with Black History month and successfully spent 30 plus weeks at the top of Billboard Gospel, plus R&B charts and "Song of Repentance" (Don't Give Up/Born Again Records 1998); "All You Need" (lead vocals by Qwan Howell & Jack Yates), "Believe In Yourself" (lead & background vocals by Jamecia Bennett) and "Oh Please" (The Next Level/Born Again 2000); "Heaven" and "Jesus You're First In My Life" (What Will Your Life Say/Born Again Records 2002); "Angels" and "Something's Happenin" (A Special Place/Liquid 8 Records 2004).

"I Trust In You" is dubbed as an unforgetable & provacative performance. The project is a dramatization based on the true story of Tatika Williams' attempted suicide (portraying herself), but God delivered her and set her free.

Roosevelt George's vocal and songwriting edge, also adding music video co-directing/performance, is fast garnering radio play and music industry attention. His music has given 'overcoming' inspiration to both gospel and secular fans from the USA to Japan and Italy. Now, his music is reaching world wide via the Internet -- watch the premiere of "I Trust In You" on GRACE Media Network (www.GMNetwork.cc) and YouTube.com.

S. Marie Graham & Community Fitness Today kicks off Black Church Week of Prayer for HIV/AIDS

Mpls/St. Paul, MN (GMS) - Community Fitness Today, Inc. marks another "If I Can Help Somebody" musical, this past Sunday, kicking off the 18th National Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS. This event is held in collaboration with the Macedonia Baptist Church (DHM) Dwight Henry McWilliams AIDS Ministry, and this year we partnered with Kwanza Community Church - where the event was held.

March 4-10, 2007...18th Annual Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS

Our featured guest this year was American Idol 2006 Top Five contestant Paris Bennett who said "I just go off the plan this afternoon, but I came here to support my Auntie Marie and Uncle Charles because I know how important this work is to them. I know we have to stop the spread of HIV and I have personallly witnessed the service they provide for individuals who are HIV positive. I know that of the estimated new AIDS cases, 61% are among African American teen girls ages 13 – 19 and that includes me! My auntie gave me my HIV presentation at an early age and I am so gratful for that."

Grammy winning Ann Nesby came to support Paris and Community Fitness Today in this event (last year's featured guest). Ann says "This was a wonderful evening and a wonderful way to share our gifts of love and financial support for those living infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. As a generation, it is always our continued effort to be supportive in the fight against AIDS".

One of the greatest issues now for Community Fitness Today, Inc. is funding. We are one of the only organizations that focus on HIV prevention and education in the church and we are the least funded organizations. The State and the County constantly remind us how important the church is in help stopping the fight against HIV/AIDS, and they also realize that statistically and culturally speaking - HIV positive people see the need for prayer and the spiritual counseling as one of the #1 priorities, yet the organizations that provide these type of services are the least funded. Funding is need to spread the word!"

We will defeat HIV/AIDS through prayer and education. My God is a God of HEALING! Yes, March 4th through 10th is THE BLACK CHURCH WEEK OF PRAYER FOR THE HEALING OF AIDS. There is a BALM IN GILEAD.

2nd Annual Benefit Concert featuring Tramaine Hawkins
(Also honoring Twelve Minnesotans featured in the 1st Minnesota African America Heritage Calendar©)

St. Paul, MN (GMS) - The Progressive Baptist Church of Saint Paul, Minnesota presents a benefit concert featuring the Gospel Hall of Famer and two-time Grammy Award Winner, Tramaine Hawkins, the illustrious multi-talented Twin Cities brother/sister quintet, The Steeles and the internationally acclaimed and legendary, Doris Hines. “We are excited and privileged to have these celebrated artists use their talents to spread the Gospel and support the Kingdom building efforts of the Progressive Family Life Center.”, says Rev. Dr. Earl F. Miller, Sr. the founder and Senior Pastor of Progressive Baptist Church. “We are also proud to honor twelve African American Minnesotans who have given unselfishly to our communities.”

The event is Friday, March 16, 2007, 7:30 to 10:00 PM at The O’Shaughnessy College of St. Catherine, 2004 Randolph Avenue, Saint Paul, Minnesota. Tickets available through Ticketmaster 651- 989-5151, www.ticketmaster.com or The O’Shaughnessy box office (651) 690- 6700.

The Steeles migrated to the Twin Cities individually, but fate had a greater plan for these talented siblings. In the 80’s, they became involved with the touring show Gospel At Colonus which has taken them around the world and finally to Broadway. The Steeles have enjoyed performing on many stages from Rome to London, but none can match the elation shared when they performed at Carnegie Hall. The sounds and the creativity of The Steeles - Jevetta, Fred, Jearlyn, Billy, and J.D - are heard or seen on stages, theaters, movies and CDs, all over the world. Corporations such as Wells Fargo Bank, Carlson Wagonlit, Target, American Express and many more are incorporating this incredible sound of The Steeles as part of their motivational strategy. They have performed locally with the acclaimed Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and their annual holiday concerts have been selling out for over two decades.

Doris Hines has performed across the United Sates and around the world with and for such artists as Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, Harry Belafonte, Dinah Washington and Sarah Vaughan to name just a few. Ms. Hines has mesmerized audiences in Australia, Japan, Okinawa, Canada and Hawaii with her astonishing 4-octave Contralto range.

Twelve notable African American Minnesotans are featured in the First Minnesota African American Heritage Calendar© for 2007. Special honors will be given to these individuals who make a difference in the lives of not only African Americans, but the lives of all of God’s people.

Angela Davis joins this Benefit Concert as the Mistress of Ceremony for the second consecutive year. This Emmy-award winning television journalist is a morning co-anchor on WCCO-TV. Angela has lived in the Twin Cities since 1994. Before coming to WCCO-TV, Davis co-anchored the morning and midday newscasts at KSTP-TV.

The Balm In Gilead, Inc. Mobilizes the 18th Annual Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS March 4-10, 2007

NEW YORK, NY -- (GMS) -- Black interdenominational religious leaders have formed a historic union to denounce stigma and to encourage testing, preventive education and compassion to help eradicate HIV/AIDS in the Black community. These leaders have joined with the Balm In Gilead in support of its 18th annual Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS, March 4-10, 2007 as well as programs throughout the year designed to support the engagement of African American congregations in HIV/AIDS education and services.

These leaders and representatives of their organizations will converge in Washington DC February 20 for a national press conference to announce a call to action to fight HIV/AIDS and to kick off the Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS — which is today, the largest AIDS awareness campaign targeting the African American faith community.

Mobilized by The Balm In Gilead, The Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS is the organization’s flagship campaign, which mobilizes thousands of faith institutions and millions of church goers to champion AIDS education, testing and compassionate care in the African American community. This is the organization’s second straight year of bringing together the leadership of the historical Black church denominations along with other national denominations and caucuses.

“This is another historic moment for the Black community,” says Pernessa C. Seele, founder and CEO, The Balm In Gilead. “For far too many years, the question has been asked, where is the Black church during this HIV/AIDS pandemic? The uniting of these leaders is a testament that the Black Church is standing up and embracing its critical role in stopping the spread of HIV/AIDS within the African American community. Congregations, led by these leaders, are formalizing strategies that include confronting stigma, HIV testing, treatment education and support for persons living with HIV/AIDS. The foundation of these strategies is prayer, which is central to the life of the church and to all people of faith.”

Seele adds, “The Balm In Gilead, along with its national spokespersons, is announcing a call to action for all congregations to join the crusade for AIDS education, prevention, testing and compassionate care and services. Stand Up! ACT Now!”

The spokespeople for the 18th annual Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS are: Bishop Preston Warren Williams, II, president, Council of Bishops, African Methodist Episcopal Church; Bishop George W. C. Walker, senior bishop, African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church; Bishop William H. Graves, Sr, senior bishop, Christian Methodist Episcopal Church; Bishop Paul S. Morton, Sr.international presiding bishop, Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship International; Rev. Dr. William J. Shaw, president, National Baptist Convention, USA; Rev. Stephen John Thurston, president; National Baptist Convention of America; Rev. Dr. T. DeWitt Smith, Jr. president, Progressive National Baptist Convention, Inc. Bishop Horace E. Smith, M.D., presiding prelate, Pentecostal Assemblies of the World, Inc. Rev. Dr. Arlee Griffin, president, American Baptist Churches, USA; Rev. Canon Nelson Pinder, president, Union of Black Episcopalians, The Episcopal Church; Rev. Michael E. Livingston, president, National Council of Churches; Archbishop Carl Bean, archbishop, Unity Fellowship of Christ Church; and, Graylan S. Hagler, president The Ministers for Racial, Social, and Economic Justice (MRSEJ), The United Church of Christ.

Since its inception in 1989, The Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS has engaged Black Churches to become centers for education, compassion and care in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

The organization is encouraging Black churches across the United States to host educational workshops, seminars, prayer vigils, or simply distribute information during the Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS. The Balm In Gilead’s Faith-Based HIV/AIDS Capacity Building Model has resulted in the development of many congregational-based HIV/AIDS programs. These congregational programmatic responses range from consistent distribution of brochures during Sunday Morning worship to full-scale direct HIV service programs.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of Black Americans living with AIDS increased by 33% between 2001 and 2005 and although Black Americans represent only 12% of the U.S. population, they account for half of AIDS cases. Black women account for the vast majority of new AIDS cases among women and while Black teens (aged 13-19) represent only 15% of U.S. teenagers, they account for more than 70% of new AIDS cases reported among teens.

The Balm In Gilead is a 501(c) (3), not-for-profit organization whose mission is to improve the health status of people of the African Diaspora by building the capacity of faith communities to address life-threatening diseases, especially HIV/AIDS. As The Balm In Gilead continues its work in the African American faith community, including the recently launched African American Denominational Leadership Health Initiative partnership with the women’s missionary societies and council of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, The African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church and The Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, it continues its international mission of building the capacity of faith communities in African countries including Nigeria and Tanzania.

GMS News Buzz

Bishop Thomas W. Weeks pleaded guilty Tuesday to assaulting his wife, prominent evangelist Juanita Bynum. "I want to apologize to my wife for all she's had to go through," Weeks said in the Fulton County courtroom.

After initially pleading not guilty to charges of aggravated assault and making terroristic threats, Weeks pleaded guilty to a single count of aggravated assault, admitting that he grabbed Bynum, threw her down and kicked her.

"My emotions got the best of me," Weeks said about the attack. "I take responsibility."

After Weeks' apology in the courtroom, Bynum thanked him. He asked for her forgiveness and she accepted. Bynum has said several times publicly since the August attack that she forgives Weeks. The two are now working on their relationship and the status of their marriage, said Ed Garland, Weeks' attorney.

Weeks was sentenced to three years probation, 200 hours of non-church related community service and ordered to undergo violence and anger counseling. A restriction barring him from communicating with Bynum was lifted. His record will be cleared if he completes the terms of his sentence, as reported by The Associated Press.

It is with much sadness that in this day and time the year 2007, that we as a people are still subjected to the ugliness of racism and prejudices of days of old. In which many of our forefathers, grandparents and parents alike sacrificed Life and Limb, to address issues of racism, that seemingly today is taken for granted, by many, until incidents like the Jena 6 awaken the world community. Let's not let the prejudices of a few become the template for the masses, when we the people of God and the community can exercise our prays and rights to make a greater change an extinguish racism ugly head.
