Dr. Rick Warren, author of “The Purpose Driven Life" will deliver the invocation at the Inaugural Ceremony of the 44th President of the United States of America Barack Obama on Jan. 20
(Aretha Franklin is among the selected ceremony group)

(GMSNewsChannel.com) Dr. Rick Warren of Saddleback Church will deliver the invocation at the Inaugural Ceremony of the 44th President of the United States of America Barack Obama on Jan. 20. Aretha Franklin is among the selected group of people who will participate in the ceremony along with Elizabeth Alexander, an African-American poet at Yale University, and some of the world’s premier musicians, including Itzhak Perlman and Yo-Yo Ma, to share the podium with him.

In honoring the civil rights movement, Mr. Obama has asked the Rev. Dr. Joseph E. Lowery, dean of the civil rights movement and co-founder with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, to deliver the benediction. The inaugural program, which begins about 10 a.m. on the West Front of the Capitol, is an historic ritual that is both an intensely personal statement by the new president and a way for him to set the tone of his new administration.

Ceremony Schedule
The program was announced today by the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, chaired by Senator Dianne Feinstein, Democrat of California:

Senator Dianne Feinstein will call the gathering to order about 11:30 and deliver opening remarks.

The program opens with musical selections by the United States Marine Band, followed by the San Francisco Boys Chorus and the San Francisco Girls Chorus.

Dr. Warren, author of “The Purpose Driven Life,” will deliver the invocation. He will be followed by Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul, who sang “Someday We’ll All Be Free” and “Respect” at a concert for Bill Clinton in 1993, but not at the inaugural ceremony.

Justice John Paul Stevens will then administer the oath of office to Vice President-elect Joseph R. Biden, Jr.

John Williams, the composer whose music was heard at Mr. Obama’s victory party on election night in Grant Park, will compose a new piece to be played for the incoming president. His new piece will be played by Mr. Perlman on violin, Mr. Ma on cello, Gabriela Montero on piano and Anthony McGill on clarinet. (Usually at this juncture in previous inaugurations an operatic soloist performs).

Chief Justice John G. Roberts will administer the oath of office to President-elect Obama. At that point, Mr. Obama will deliver his inaugural address. He will be followed by Ms. Alexander, who will read a poem, and Dr. Lowery’s benediction.

The ceremony will close with the United States Navy Band “Sea Chanters” singing the National Anthem.

Special music guest

BRIDGET DAWKINS. Her name is synonymous with pure, honey-laced, yet soulful, vocals. Her voice embodies the influences of her gospel-singing grandmother, Thelma Conway; the jazz & blues musicianship of her internationally-known uncle, James Van Buren; and the powerful R&B sound of her cousin Michael Van Buren’s Bay area band, “Van Buren”. As with many vocalists who have become great singers, Bridget honed her vocal skills in church at an early age. She received classical and jazz vocal training from the age of 9 throughout college from Julliard- trained vocal teachers and studied piano, ballet and jazz dance for 10 years.

Her theater credits include these rousing portrayals: Mrs. Claus in the Sounds of Blackness’ production “The Night Before Christmas”, the Goddess of Love ‘Erzulie’ in the local production of Tony Award-nominated “Once On This Island”(which the City Pages deemed her as “honey-voiced” in), and as Billie Holiday, Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle and Josephine Baker in the Pillsbury Theater’s ‘Sugar & Spice’. As a current member of the Grammy-Award Winning Sounds of Blackness, Bridget performs nationally. Though a Star Tribune news review said that she “brings robust gospel joy” to her performance of Gladys Knight in the Sounds’ “Soul of the 60’s Revue”, many refer to her as “Tina” for her “Tina Turner-style vocal abilities. The local Kare 11 TV featured her as “Tina” as one of their “Extra” programs. Bridget also has her own band called “The Dawkins Project” which highlights the music of jazz & R&B divas like Phyllis Hyman, Regina Belle, Nina Simone, Chaka Khan, Natalie Cole, Angela Bofill, Miki Howard and Anita Baker. Her voice touches you in a place that you didn’t know existed and leaves you wanting more!

Owner and Founder of Michele Foods To be keynote speaker for the 3rd Loving From the Inside Out "Women Of Courage" Luncheon! Oct 11
Luncheon host is Fox 9 news anchor Robyne Robinson
(a panel discussion with a diverse mix of men - Terry Austin, Rev. Melvin Miller, Kevin Mason, Nate Russell, Alex Hines, Mark Robinson)

Mpls/St. Paul, MN (GMS) The 3rd Annual Loving from the Inside Out (LFTIO) Symposium is a weekend event in honor of Mamie Till Mobley on October 10-11, 2008. Don't miss luncheon Keynote speaker, author, CEO of Michele Foods, 3 time featured guest on Oprah, Michele Hoskins, host Robyne Robinson, FOX 9 News anchor, The 2008 Woman of Courage Awardees, and more.

Twenty-Five years ago, a divorced ex-school teacher had children to support, a family secret and a dream. Michele Hoskins’ determination to “leave her daughters a business instead of just a recipe" was the inspiration for Michele Foods. The foundation of Michele Foods is a secret syrup recipe handed down to daughters from a great-great-grandmother.

Today she sells Honey Crème, Butter Pecan, and Maple Crème syrups that “are found in over 10,000 food stores nationwide.

In 2003 Michele purchased a “State of the Art” manufacturing company located in Cincinnati, Ohio. Michele Foods Manufacturing is an 8 (a) certified female minority owned and operated company. They manufacture a wide variety of syrups and other liquid products. They also have a wide range of food service accounts.

Twenty-Five years ago it was unknown for an African American woman to be the CEO of a major food company. That’s why the first thing I tell people is to invest in yourself, she adds, “if you don’t believe in yourself, no one else will. I invested the capital I made from selling virtually everything I had. I never had any bank loans or investors, only one small line of credit when I started in October 1984. I learned how to live off receivables early on.”

“I put God first. I believe that anything can manifest itself with faith, hard work and perseverance. So never give up.” Hoskins adds: As soon as you give up, the dream is gone. A dream is something that unfolds to you as you work it. Whatever happens, look at it from a very positive and spiritual way.”

Michele has achieved much success through her 25 years in the business. Michele’s most current recognition includes feature articles in Black Enterprises, Ebony, Essence, People, Fortune Magazines and USA Today. However, by far, Michele is most excited about completing her book “Sweet Expectations”.

During 2007, Michele was featured on several TV and Radio “talk- shows” such as Montel Williams, Donnie Duersch, and Michael Baisden. Additional highlights include, Michele being featured on the CNN TV Morning Show and “Personal Journey” aired Michele’s story on both CNN and Discovery channels. She has been featured three times on Oprah Winfrey’s Show and on all major news channels, i.e., WGN, NBC (5), ABC (7), Fox News, Black Entertainment Television (BET).

planet Ordway Target Season World Dance Series continues with
Ronald K. Brown and Evidence Wednesday, October 15, 7:30 p.m.

Mpls/St. Paul, MN (GMS) -- The Ordway Center for the Performing Arts planet Ordway Target Season for 2008-09 continues with Ronald K. Brown Evidence.
Founded by Ronald K. Brown in 1985 and based in Brooklyn, New York, Evidence focuses on the seamless fusion of traditional African dance with contemporary choreography and spoken word. This work provides a unique view of human struggles, tragedies, and triumphs. Brown uses movement as a way to reinforce the importance of community in African American culture and to acquaint audiences with the beauty of traditional African forms and rhythms. He is an advocate for the growth of an African American dance community and is instrumental in encouraging young dancers to choreograph and to develop careers in dance.

Brown has choreographed works on Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Ailey II, Cleo Parker Robinson Ensemble, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, Jennifer Muller/The Works, Jeune Ballet d’Afrique Noire, Ko-Thi Dance Company and Philadanco. He choreographed Regina Taylor’s award-winning play, Crowns. “I hope that when people see the work their spirits are lifted. I am interested in sharing perspectives through modern dance, theater and kinetic storytelling. I want my work to be evidence of these perspectives,” says Brown.

Evidence is bringing three works to Ordway Center’s Main Hall Stage Come Ye, inspired by the work of jazz singer Nina Simone and the events of September 11; Grace, originally choreographed for the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater, is a spiritual journey set to the music of Duke Ellington and others; and One Shot, a multimedia work inspired by the images and legacy of noted African American photographer Charles “Teenie” Harris.

Ronald K. Brown Evidence
One Shot – First Glance; Come Ye; and Grace
Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2008, 7:30 p.m.
Gia Kourlas of The New York Times called Ronald K. Brown “something of an archaeologist” as, in his pieces, “there is the sense of a singular artist digging for a forgotten treasure.” Brown’s work blends history and contemporary movement, with the goal of portraying the human experience in visual testimony on stage.

One Shot – First Glance pays homage to the photographer Charles “Teenie” Harris, known for documenting African-American lives at The Pittsburgh Courier from 1936 to 1975. Come Ye, based on the Nina Simone song of the same name, is a call for peace and a tribute to people who “have no fear, and still have hope and love,” according to Brown. Grace, originally set on Alvin Ailey Dance Theater in 1999, is a staple in Evidence’s strong repertory. This season marks the twentieth anniversary of the company, a testament to Brown’s choreographic genius. Visit evidencedance.com for more information

Campaign Literacy Awareness: The Right To READ™ (CLA) along with Simply Phonic, Simply Reading™ have created a solution to meet a need. And, it is paying off. "We put 'tools that work' the Simply Phonics, Simply Reading Kit© in the hands of folks in the trenches -- in their homes, churches & the workplace and schools, who refuse to leave a child or adult behind who has a literacy challenge.

Remember -- Participating Organizations will donate the collected family-friendly rarely used or brand new books to their selected shelter, school, correctional facility, community center, book giving program or a CLA designated drop site listed on GMNetwork.cc under the
CLA: The Right To READ™ link.

Statement by Marc H. Morial, President and CEO of
the National Urban League Regarding the Financial Crisis and Bailout

September 25, 2008 (GMS) -- “The financial plan and bailout proposed by Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson needs major changes before Congress considers it.

How this plan is ultimately structured will determine whether this is a true Wall Street rescue plan or an irresponsible bailout. This plan will ultimately determine whether the
executives on Wall Street or the American people on Main Street are the primary beneficiaries. The National Urban League urges that the proposed plan includes protection for homeowners facing foreclosure and financial returns back to

the public in exchange for bailing out the companies that have caused this crisis.

We strongly believe that it must include assistance for homeowners facing foreclosure
and neighborhoods needing stabilization, particularly minority communities that have
been disproportionately affected by predatory lenders and unscrupulous and
unregulated mortgage brokers.

From our view, the current plan is a blank one-way check by us and our children to the
Wall Street executives and shareholders who pushed millions of families into high
priced loans. Congress must make major modifications to this plan before it merits
public support.”

National Urban League (www.nul.org) - Established in 1910, The Urban League is the nation's oldest and largest community-based movement devoted to empowering African Americans to enter the economic and social mainstream. Today, the National Urban League, headquartered in New York City, spearheads the non-partisan efforts of its local affiliates. There are over 100 local affiliates of the National Urban League located in 35 states and the District of Columbia providing direct services to more than 2
million people nationwide through programs, advocacy and research.
