Governor's Commission marks 25th anniversary of Minnesota ’s adoption of the federal Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday - keynote speaker is Robin Hickman

Robin Hickman(GMSNewsChannel.com) St. Paul, MN - Jan 11, 2011 The state Council on Black Minnesotans has planned a number of activities to mark the 25th anniversary of the Minnesota ’s adoption of the federal Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday. The theme for this year’s program is “Unarmed Truth:” The Blueprint for Lasting Change.”

As part of the celebration, the Council will hold a rally at Saint Paul’s Central High School, followed by a march from the school to Concordia University, which is hosting the main program and exhibits. The keynote speaker at this year’s event is Robin Hickman, President of SoulTouch. Robin is a Saint Paul Independent TV/Film Producer, Social Impact Activist and Community Engagement consultant.

• Rally - 9:30-10:30 AM, Saint Paul Central High School Auditorium, 275 N. Lexington Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55104
• March - 10:35 AM, From Central High School to Concordia University
• Keynote speaker - 12:20 PM, Robin Hickman, president of SoulTouch, at Concordia University

The celebration also includes spoken word, music and dance performances and a multi-media historical exhibit. Governor Mark Dayton and US Senators Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken have been invited to speak about the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Martin Luther King, Jr., Day holiday. A bill to adopt the federal holiday in Minnesota was introduced to the Minnesota Legislature by Rep. Randolph Staten. The measure was signed into law in January 1986.

The Council on Black Minnesotans was created by the Minnesota Legislature in July 1980 (Minnesota Statutes Section 3. 9225). The Council’s primary purpose is to advise the Governor and Legislature on the nature and intensity of issues confronting the State’s Black Population.
