HELP Teen Collect New Books & Toys

Alyssa Green at age 10 and her family planned on moving to Minnesota from Florida. However, they couldn’t afford the trip. A lady from church knew of their need and paid for their travel expenses. This example of generosity had a positive impact on Green. Now at age 17, a senior at Cooper High School in New Hope, her natural instinct is to show generosity to Hurricane Katrina victims who have moved to the Twin Cities area.

Green’s heart was immediately drawn to the children and mothers affected by the hurricane, after watching television news reports on the natural disaster. Initially, it was too surreal for her to believe. “At first I thought it was a movie. Kids didn’t have diapers and mothers didn’t know how they would feed the children or where. I knew I couldn’t go down there. My daughter had diapers and infant milk that she doesn‘t use anymore.” After collecting items at home, Green, with the help of elders at her church High Praise Ministries The Destiny Center, Minneapolis, spearheaded efforts supported by the youth ministry to gather items for donation. These items were collected to help several families of Katrina survivors here [Twin Cities}.

Green has continued her goodwill efforts beyond the pulpit and on to school. Currently, for the holiday season Green is collecting money at her school, Robbinsdale Cooper High School, where she is a senior. She carries a clear bucket that reads: “Don’t forget about Hurricane Katrina victims for Christmas. God bless you. Thank you.” Fellow students inquire about the bucket, and so far they are responding. Green has collected 15 dollars. Additionally, she now needed a location to serve as a drop site for children's new toys, clothes and books.

Green was able to meet one of the families who have benefited from her labors. In that meeting she realized, “you can survive when people help you out.” Green wants to continue helping people in dire situations, as her life’s work. “It’s not a one time thing. It’s a continuing thing. You would want somebody to [help] you and I want to continue doing it as much as I can. I love helping people it’s one of my passions. That’s what I want to do when I get out of high school -- "I want to be a pediatrician when I get older..." "When you help somebody, you feel like you achieved something. It gives me more faith."”

There's no doubt in Green's mind that the kids will celebrate Christmas. "We're still collecting and will collect for Christmas, too, so they'll have presents," she said (StarTribune Sept'05). The positive pro-action of one teenager's (like so many other teens) response to Katrina kids need is now upon the eve of Christmas, she is reaching the need of her communities' children. Again soliciting guidance and assistance in her Relief effort, her call was responded to by Campaign Literacy Awareness: The Right To READ® (CLA), an initiative of GRACE Media Network. CLA called upon its partners Sabathani Community Center and Network for the Development of Children of African Descent (NdCAD) (CLA Endorsed Book Giving Program/Resource 10/2002 Mpls., MN) to assist Green in realizing her effort.

Boh partners positively responded. Sabathani Community Center extended its doors as the drop-site to receive both the family-friendly new books and toys requested by Green; NdCAD will donat books. CLA is requesting of the community at large to HELP.

After Hurricane Katrina Update...
MINNESOTA

News Advisory
The survivors of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita who are staying in Minnesota face an important deadline that is rapidly approaching. We would appreciate help from the news media in getting the message out to survivors and people who may have contact with them.

Hurricane survivors have until Dec. 15 to sign up for the Interim Shelteing Program (ISP) available through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). That is also the date FEMA will stop covering costs for survivors now staying in hotels and motels.

Survivors must be registered with FEMA and have a FEMA identification number prior to applying for ISP assistance. Survivors can register with FEMA by calling 800-621-FEMA (3326) or online at www.fema.org.

Survivors residing in Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott and Washington counties who want to apply for ISP assistance should contact the Metropolitan Council Housing and Redevelopment Authority at 651-602-1688.

Survivors residing in all other Minnesota counties who want to apply for ISP assistance should contact the Minnesota Housing Finance Agency at 651-296-9832 or 800-657-3701.

Families who want ISP assistance are encouraged to apply for it immediately. Eligible evacuees must complete the application and sign a lease by the Dec. 15 deadline.

HousingLink, a Minneapolis-based organization, is a valuable source of affordable housing information to service agencies, housing providers and policymakers in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Its Web page on housing assistance for hurricane survivors can be found at www.housinglink.org/Katrina.htm . It includes an inventory of available rental housing.

Charlsetta "Charley" Palmer *A GMS tribute to the life & legacy of Mrs. Palmer

Our Queen Mother, the Evangelist, Woman of Grace, Champion and Friend

Charlesetta Hubert Palmer was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on July 31, 1935. She was the fifth child and youngest daughter of Thelma Woods Hubert and John R. Hubert. Two brothers, J. R. Hubert, Jr. and C.W. Bolden proceeded her in death, as well as her older sister, Dorothy Hubert Jackson.

Charlesetta attended Booker T. Washington High School of Tulsa and graduated class of 1953, where she enjoyed performing as a Football Majorette; pursued secondary education and graduated from the Oklahoma School of Business & Accountancy. She joined church at an early age, being baptized by her Uncle, Rev. William Harrison Woods at Progressive Baptist Church.

After starting a family, she was especially pleased to have been able to complete business school in Tulsa. After her move to Minneapolis, Minnesota she joined the Minneapolis Credit Bureau -- the first Black consumer credit interviewer and was recognized and profiled by the Minneapolis Skyway News as 'Ms. Skyway' , working until her disability (Muscular Sclerosis) retirement. Even then, she began to solicit the financial support of the Lyndale neighborhood business community to send children of lower income to the Lyndale YWCA Summer Camp Program.

She committed her life to Christ Jesus. She continued to impact lives for the Lord wherever she went and lived. Well known to many, she was a champion for the rights of children and social justice: Among many established a scholarship for low-income children in the Lyndale Neighborhood (Mpls.) to attend the YWCA/YMCA; volunteer with Minnesota Institute for Black Chemical Abuse (MIBCA). She leaves three children; Prophetess Shena SB Barber Stalling (Charles), Darren Whitaker Palmer and Adrienne Palmer; one brother, Edison Hubert Sr, and God-sister and special friend "Tootsie".
